I met this young lady today. I really like her hair style. But under close investigtion, I realized that her hair is in locks and the locks were wrapped tightly for form these cute curls.

The curls remind me of a weave that I installed in my hair many years ago the name of the weave was called sinagal twist.

I have been procastinating on doing this post for some time now. I started the month of December by mostly pulling my hair back into one. I have been noticing that as I comb my hair, alot of my hair would remain in my comb. I realized that I have not been taking good care of my hair. So one evening I decided to apply some moisturizer to my hair and braid it in two. The next day I unplait my hair and finger combed it.

I got alot of compliments about my hair that day. Quite a few of my villa guest said that they liked my hair that way. So I continued doing it and was enjoying my hair as well. I am also showing off my hair length as well!

Michelle Obama's Hair Is All Natural!

Michelle is a no-lye lady. This is so refreshing to know especially with the majority of black celebrity women having extremely unbelievably long weaves in their hair.

It may not seem like a big deal, but black women for centuries have been trying to get that hair nirvana - without chemicals.

After the much-talked-about purple Maria Pinto sheath Obama wore when Barack clinched and the White House/Black Market sundress that sold out in hours after her appearance on The View, we have more reason to pay attention to our potential first lady's style choices.

Her heavenly mane is blown out by Johnny Wright, a California-based stylist at Frédéric Fekkai on Melrose Place.

Wright, a consultant for Soft Sheen Carson, works his magic on Anita Baker, Vivica A. Fox and Vanessa Williams. He met Obama after he styled her hair for the cover of Ebony magazine.

The news first broke that Wright was Obama's stylist on BellaSugar.com in late July. New York magazine picked up the story as well, insinuating Obama was snooty for requesting her stylist travel with her to the convention. (Isn't that the right of a potential first lady?)

While Fekkai has been reluctant recently to talk about Obama's hair, citing privacy issues, company spokeswoman Denise Davila did say that her hair was blown out by Wright and that he did not use chemicals in her hair. And yesterday morning, the Today show did a segment touting Frédéric Fekkai products.

The bigger question is: How is this mane magic possible? Can black women have such a silky look without chemicals at all?

"It is totally possible to have hair that straight without having a relaxer," explained Brandy Davila (no relation to Denise), hairstylist and color specialist at Bubbles Salon on Walnut Street. Davila styles the 10! Show's Lori Wilson, an African American anchorwoman with a sleek style similar to Obama's.

"The key is in the products and the tools that are being used," Davila said.

Davila said that in the last five years, more black women who wear their hair straight are moving away from relaxers because they desire more movement. Women with color-treated hair also are moving away from chemical straighteners because of breakage issues.

To get the look, Davila said, she shampoos and conditions hair, then applies a dime-size amount of Phytodefrisant and Phytolisse cocktail. These two products, she said, protect the hair from the heat of the blow dryer and help with shine.

After that, Davila said, the hair is blown out under low heat with a paddle brush. To get the maximum body, straightness and curl, Davila uses a flat iron, which gets as hot as 400 degrees. Right now the most popular flat irons in the black haircare market are Chi and Fhi irons.

"These irons let you control the heat," Davila said.

Davila said the style could last from three to six days, depending on the humidity.

"My story is not unlike a lot of sista's out there. I went from relaxing my hair to extensions and weave that made me look like I had a face lift every six weeks! I was fed up, had an ultra sensitive scalp and a rapidly receding hairline. I literally went on strike and refused to comb my hair anymore! I learned how to start locking up and that transition was tough. I certainly didn't have hair that swished in the breeze anymore as it was about three inches long but on the up side my husband was no longer banned from running his fingers through my hair! Was it worth it? Absolutely. Black hair is as versatile as it is majestic. Let's celebrate it!"

Guyanese Lady Named Gillian

It has been a while since I approached a stranger and asked her to take a picture of her hair. I met this lovely young lady today as she was doing her early morning daily chore of checking the fleet of yachts at Hodges Creek, Tortola BVI. My husband first noticed her and commented that she had nice long hair. As we passed her by and said our morning greetings, my husband told me that he wanted to compliment her about her hair but he thought that I would have been angry with him. I assured him that I would not have been.

So he went about doing his business of fishing with his friend and I got an opportunity to speak to this young lady. She is Guyanese and her name is Gillian. I complimented on her beautiful head of hair and I asked her if she ever thought of cutting it and she said she actually did on many occasions. Apparently her grows back very quickly. She also informed me that her husband does not like it when she cuts her hair. I wonder why, my husband does not like it when I cut my hair either. She also informed me that in its natural form, her hair is very curly and I know that could be a nightmare sometimes especially after shampooing the hair. She has a relaxer in her hair which allows her hair to be more manageable.

High Maintenance Hairstyle

This is my beautiful second cousin Nicola! I am so excited to do this post about her. I was part of her life when she was a young child. It was always a joy to spend time with her, her mom (my first cousin) and her brothers. I miss them alot. I feel so proud seeing her in this photo.

Many moons ago, I too had my hair cut in this style. While it looks pretty, it is very high maintenance. By that I mean you always have to keep it looking good. You know when your hair has some length there are times when you do not feel like styling your hair and you can easily pull it back in a pony tail. Well with this hair style you can't do that! It is a beautiful hairstyle though. The other problem I had was I did not like the way my

hair looked when the hair at the back of my head started to grown. So I would return to the hairdress and have her cut it again.

Back to my beautiful cousin, this is what she had to say about her hair style.

"I actually enjoy my hair short, it's easy to shampoo and dry. I style it and relax for myself when it's that short. When I think the back is growing out too much, I let my stylist shave it down for me.

The products I use are: motions hair moisturizer, motions hair and scalp grease, motions CPR conditioner, olive oil/optimum relaxer, olive oil hair sheen.

To me the hardest part is deciding to grow it back out. You know that in between stage when the hair too short to go in a pony tail, that's what I'm going through right now."

My Daughters Pin Curls

My daughter's latest report: After two weeks it was time to wash my hair after relaxing it. I really didn't want to use my flat iron or curling iron. Plus I wanted more body in my hair. So i decided to use curlers, then i realized there wasn't enough for my hair. So I went on YouTube searching what to do and I decided to try pin curls. It actually came out good.

I am very pleased with these results as I have been trying to get my daughter to stop using the curling for a long time now. She likes the results - that is an improvement. The only thing though, is that using the hair clips, I notice that the hair ends stick out. An extra effort has to be made to tuck them in before clipping the hair. I use the tiny woogies so I don't have that problem.

New Growth Under Control

The last time I relaxed my hair was in July when I was on vacation in Trinidad. I am now due for a touch up - there is alot of new hair growth. As I go to the beach basically every other day and wash my hair after each session, if I leave my hair to air dry, it is very difficult to comb my hair and the new hair growth and their is alot of hair breakage.

So I have decided to apply some Vaseline grease to my hair after washing it and simply tying my head. After a few hours my hair roots are under control and it is much easier for me to manage.

Unattractive Hair Smell

I like Olive Oil Organic products so I recently purchased the shampoo, conditioner and moisturizer. I notice, however, that when I open out my hair, it has an unpleasant smell which is not due to not washing my hair on a regular basis. My hair smells as though I sweat alot in my head - which I don't.

I go the beach often so I wash out the salt water each time I return home from the beach. I use the Olive Oil Organic Root Stimulator Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion at night to keep my hair and ends moist.
I have subsequently stopped using this product and am just using some plain old Vaseline to keep my hair ends. No more unattractive hair smell!

Don't get me wrong, these are great hair products maybe I should wash my hair more often.

I Am Getting Back My Lenght!

Just showing off the progress of my hair. I had it relaxed and a rinse applied, in Trinidad - June 2011. I have been going to the beach regularly and have not been treating my hair very kindly even though I have been washing out the salt water. I notice that there have been alot of breakage when I comb my hair. So I bought some Organic Olive Oil Shampoo, Conditioner and Hair Moisturizer (I love these products) and I section my hair at night and apply the moisturizer paying attention to the ends. Then I wrap each section into a Bantu Knot. I am getting back my length and I want my hair to be healthy!

Brown Pom Pom Hair

I was taking photos of the BVI Festival East End Parade on Wednesday August 3, 2011 and I saw this young lady parading, her hair style caught my attention. Her brown hair was sectioned off in little Pom Poms. I can assure you that is the natural color of her hair.

So eventhough I was on the look out for beautiful festival pictures, I was also looking out for beautiful hair like the gentleman below. He did not even know what 'hit' him! LOL!!!

Old Friend

Wow I am so excited about this post today. My model today is an old friend of mine. We have known each other for many years. As a matter of fact our mothers were very good friends and WE became friends! Her family migrated to USA more than 20 years ago and thanks to Facebook, we can now keep in touch with other on a regular basis.

As you can see her hair is in locks, she has beautiful hair. In the first picture you can see the length of her hair. The gentleman with her is her nephew. Hopefully I will get pictures of him some time in the future.

I asked Levi what are the possibilities of going swimming on a regular basis and what are the dislikes and likes she experiences having her hair in locks and the followin are her responses:

Swimming is very enjoyable, just have to be careful on the environment due to the fact that its so much hair things can attach itself and u are not aware. Ocean no problem let it all hang loose. rivers etc. wrap it up. this is just my opinion. I am very protective.

Hair drying depends on the season. Summer beautiful u can allow it to dry naturally. Winter it takes planning and time allotted to do a complete job. before you go out in the elements.

Issues: I have tender scalp, so to carry or style this amount of hair is a sensitive thing. Strangers just walking up and touching without my permission(very bad). When u sit get it out the way because if u forget could be very painful (neckwise). will miss it when I cut it!

Likes: its facinating to see all my hair on my head for the pass seven years and not in the shower drain.

This choice was accidental. my daughter is amazed at the growth every time she come home. ( still can't get her to take care of my hair she is always asking me to do her hair. well girl going back to work enjoyed digging into by innerself to find answers. these are things one does not normally think of. lov u have a great day!

Heavy Long Locks

I met this lovely lady, Mary, on my trip to Trinidad in June of this year and my first question to her was if the dye in her hair was not causing her hair to break and the responded negatively. Another piece of information that she provided me with, is that her hair was much longer and she had to cut it because it had gotten too heavy! I was very surprised as I never thought of long lock being heavy. Apparently the weight was causing her headaches etc. In addition when she washed her hair it was even heavier!!! I can relate to this because on the few occasions I installed braids in my hair and I washed it, I felt the weight on my hair. Very interesting piece of information.

It took me a while to decide what content I should write for these pictures and I finally got it!

My daughter sent me these pictures about two days ago of her hair that she had recently applied some color to. It looks really great! It gives her face a different look. You have to be real careful when applying permanent color to your hair. I remember my previous employer always wore a wig and I asked her the reason why and she explained that she went to have her relaxed and wanted a permanent colour applied as well.

Apparently the hairdresser did not advise her that the permanent hair colour could not be done the same day that the hair was relaxed. So my ex-employer's hair was relaxed and coloured the same day! And what happen next was just crazy. She said that she did not like the colour so she had someone else apply another colour to her hair - which was within a few days! Absolutely crazy! So you can guess what happened next! Her hair began to fall out in chunks. So she had to resort to wearing the wigs until her hair grew back.

Why I Decided to Cut my Hair

I cut my hair in December 2010. My hair was really long when I cut it. In South Africa, December is the start of summer. I did not have it cut really short. In case I missed my long hair I had it cut to shoulder length.
Besides a shorter hairstyle making it possible for me to feel a bit cooler in the summer, there are other reasons why I cut my hair:

I had not even trimmed the ends of my hair in nearly four years, and the ends were looking messy.

I’m trying to fit in some training to run in a 16 km race (about 10 miles) and long hair even in a ponytail gets in the way, and when I’m so unfit, I feel that long hair even weighs me down a bit!

I’m working from home, still building my little business and the work takes up a lot of my time; there’s not much time for taking great care of long hair, and sometimes I’d even have knots to deal with that irritated me when I needed to rather spend time working.

I don’t use a hair dryer to dry my hair, preferring it to dry naturally, and long hair takes a lot longer to dry than short hair.

My hair grows quickly, so if I did miss it, which I don’t, it wouldn’t be too long before it grew long again.

Before, when I’ve cut my hair, people told me that the shorter cut makes me look younger, so now, as I’m feeling old and worn before my time while trying to work so hard at my little home business, I thought it would be great to look a bit younger, and that maybe it would make me feel younger too.

There were hardly any reasons not to cut my hair, and I’m really glad I did have it cut.

Before I washed my hair

Tangled Hair

Recently I styled my hair in a simple up-do, and of course my hair stylist used spritz and gel to hold the style. After about two weeks of wearing the style I washed it out. A handful of hair came out while I was combing my hair and I thought to myself my hair was breaking. So I decided to give my hair a break from processing and daily heat from my curling iron by braiding it.

After I washed my hair and styled it

Yesterday, I decided to remove my braids after about 3 weeks. Boy did I regret it. I forgot to comb out my hair before I washed it, which resulted in huge tangles of hair in my head. I tried so many things to untangle my hair, without breaking it but I couldn’t. Sadly I had to, this time more hair came out than the first time. I don’t think I will be braiding my hair again anytime soon. Nevertheless, I steamed my hair with Dr. Miracles Tingling Deep Conditioning Treatment. Hopefully my hair will revive from this trauma!!

My daughter took this video at home in Trinidad. She is so funny, she thought that the sounds were gunshots and was a little scared until she realized that it was fireworks. I told her that my husband and I was having the same discussion. A friend of his in Tortola BVI, had the same problem. He thought that the sounds were gunshots and found it hard to believe when my husband told him that it was fireworks!!!

Surprised by hairstyle

On Monday November 30, 2010, I washed my hair and set it in some small pink rollers. The next morning I combed out my hair and as it was still a bit curly so I combed my hair into one big finger curl.

I decided to go to work with my hair like that. It was in my opinion that it was looking presentable enough to go to work with. To my great surprise two of my friends liked my hair style and actually came close to me, touched my hair to see what I had done with it. I was really surprised.

I took some pictures for you to see - see below. Sorry the pictures are a bit blurred. At night, I roll my hair into two big pin curls - that's it. I find that when I comb out my hair it is nice, full and bouncy! I like that!

Unwanted 'locks'!

Okay people, this is my latest update. In my last post, I had a picture of my hair braided. Well even though it looked great, I did not want not want it that long. So the next weekend I decided to have my hairdresser style my hair. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures.

She twist the front and put the balance of the hair in one and rolled it into a bun. I left the salon feeling good about my hair and saying to myself that I can keep this hairstyle for a few weeks.

Well after the third day I found that I was scratching my scalp alot and it was quite aggravating. Make me feel as if I was unclean. I don't think I made a week after I had my hair styled. A few days later I unwrapped the hair and applied some moisturizer to my scalp. I felt alot better and I noticed that I was not itching as much after that.
Well on Friday evening after work, I decided to remove the braids, wash my hair and have it relaxed on Monday on my day off (the braids was looking very untidy). It did not take long to remove the braids because the plaits were large. But after I washed my hair, the nightmare began.

Certain parts of my hair knotted up and I was unable to untangle them. It was so ironic. I was thinking of ‘locking’ my hair and here I was with parts of my hair in unwanted locks!

So Saturday morning bright and early I want to my hairdresser had her untangle my hair. I was a bit scared as I thought she would have told me that I would have to cut my hair to remove the knots. But it went well.

Twist Braids

Okay everyone, this is my latest update. It has been a while. I had some braids put in my hair yesterday. Something that I did not really wanted to do. As you know I have been thinking alot about 'locking' my hair but I don't think I am quite ready yet. And the last person that I spoke to, they said that it hurts, during maintenance, restyling etc and it is a bit expensive. So I am still doing my research on the idea.

In the mean time I still have not touch up my hair. While my hair was being braided, I am sure my new hair growth is about two inches! This is not the braid that I wanted. I wanted the twist, yes, but I wanted each twist to be fatter and the hair length shorter. But my hairdresser told me that if she cut the hair, it would have unravelled out. I was too tired to argue with her.

My husband took these picures and they look great! As I was setting up my camera to take some pictures, he came home and I asked him to take these pictures for me. He did a great job. Maybe this is finally something that we can do together and enjoy!

My Dread Locks

Okay it is officially four months since I last touch up my hair. I have alot of new growth and it is a bit of a chore to comb after I wash it. But I will continue to stretch my relaxer until I really decide what I am going to do with my hair. Maybe as the new hotel industry season starts (around November) I may think of doing a touch. But we will see. I am enjoying playing with my natural waves when ever I get a chance.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet a fello SBIer who has a site about dreadlocks. I was so excited to meet her. There is alot of great information on the site. Its list info like testing the lock style with synthetic locks (if you indecisive in making the transition like I am) which I found to be a great idea. Check out her site.

On my visit to Anegada on August 11, 2010, I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman, he was retrieving a basket of lobster that they keep in the shallow part of the beach. He informed me that it is a method of keep the
lobster fresh. Well as he came out of the water, he shook his locks and as he noticed that I was taking pictures, he shook his locks some more. Marvellous!

This is the groom for the wedding that I had to attend in St. Vincent on August 1, 2010. He wears his hair in locks and was having it re-twisted for the wedding. I took the opportunity to chat with his hairdresser, telling her about my thoughts of wearing my hair natural, maybe in a locks hair style as well. I saw alot of people wearing their hair in locks in St. Vincent. Some were looking a bit untidy.

This young lady told me that she too was thinking about locking her hair but she keeps changing her mind for two reasons. Eventhough she can do it for herself, it would be quite difficult to do so plus it would be a bit costly to have it done. To have it re-twisted would take about 2-3 hours. As you see the gentleman took the opportunity to have a little nap!

This is my mother-in-law, she was unplaiting her so grandaughter could re-plait it for the wedding on August 1, 2010. She has a beautiful set of grey hair, it is so soft and light. I am sure she never put any sort of chemicals in her hair. My mother use to relax her hair and now she has a jerri curl. She is now in her 80's and she does not dye her hair, she hardly has any grey hair! She is truely blessed!

My hairstyle for the wedding

Okay this is what I did with my hair for the wedding. I took my pom pom hair piece with me. One evening we were hanging out in the front porch at my mother-in-law's place in St. Vincent and I was telling my niece-in-law about my desire not to relax my hair. So she simply began to comb out my hair (she had a little problem) and applied some hair dress to my hair and scalp. She even gave me a scalp massage. It felt really good!

Then I realized she was parting my hair to plait it, I was about to protest but I allowed her to do her own thing. She braid the front my head and left the back alone in order for me to pull it back in one and clip on my hair piece. I kept the hair style until I left the Island.

Before I left for St. Vincent I did a test of twisting my hair into small Bantu Knots but as I came out of the airplane and walked to the Airport terminal in Antigua, my curls were blown out. In addition to that, I sweat a lot so I decided against twisting my hair for the wedding.

One of my visitors suggested that I set my hair in small rollers. I did the test with my hair dry but the setting did not stay for too long.

I thought that it should work if my hair is wet, so I decided to wash my hair but as I have so much new growth, I had great difficulty parting my hair. What I should have done was to set my hair dry and THEN sprayed my hair with some water. Unfortunately I was unable to get a really close up picture of the completed hairstyle. Maybe you can see it in this picture on the right.

I am quite behind in my postings because all my time has been injected into my cooking website which I have recently designed so I have to transfer each pages (about 150 of them). About my hair, right now I have alot of new growth and have a strong desire not to do a touch up. As I have mentioned in a few of my previous posts, I have to attend a wedding in a few days and again there is no desire to relax my hair.

This is Monet, my son's girlfriend. She wears her hair natural. She recently has her hair re twisted and I asked her how long it took to have the hair style done and she said that it took about three hours! On the days when her hair was longer, it would have taken about five hours! Lovely isn't she!

What To Do?

I can't decide what to do. My husband and I have to attend a wedding, in St. Vincent, in August and I am having a hard time deciding how to style my hair. I know the choices are many but many them I am not willing to do.

Okay my choices are to braid or weave my hair. I am not prepared to spend that many hours and money at the hairdresser plus I know soon afterward I would want to remove the braids/weave. In addition, if I have it done before I travel, by the time of the wedding the hairstyle will be 'stale'. I would be traveling on the Friday and the wedding is on the Sunday.

My other option is to do my regular Bantu Knots hair style but to be frank, I really would like to do something different. If I set and style my hair, the style would not hold for (I sweat alot) very long unless I apply some hair spray. Don't want to do that either.

I recently saw a documentary hosted by Chris Rock, it was about black woman and their hair. One particular interview that he did that stood at me was with a group of about four ladies. He asked them what are the disadvantages of growing your hair natural and one woman gave her opinion that when - a women attends an interview with her natural (some women wear their hair as if they plait it the night before and just unplait it the next morning), she personally would not take the person seriously. It is a fact, some people do still think like that. There was a lady, within the group that Chris interviewed, who wore her hair exactly like that.

But if the bearer of the hairstyle, just styles the natural hair, I think she/he would be more respected. It’s just like the first impressions of a person wearing a Rasta hairstyle are not of a serious nature. It is totally different if that same person walks into a room with their hair well cut and groomed.

When I first migrated to the BVI, you were not permitted to stay on the island if you wore a Rasta hairstyle. I remember one year for BVI Music Festival, Singing Sandra (a singer from Trinidad & Tobago) was sent back home because the wore this hair style. She was to perform at the festival.

The BVI laws were revised a few years later.
Things are changing these days and alot of black men and women are wearing their hair in locks as a choice of hairstyle. It is their choice to wear their hair natural and the world needs to see how beautiful the black hair is AND it can grow very long!!!!

My routine every night is to moisturize my hair and twist it into Bantu knots. Last night I realized that my curls were nice and bouncy so I applied a small amount of moisturizer to my hair and pulled it back into one big Bantu knot.

This morning I just sprayed my hair with some ORS Oil Sheen spray, finger comb in my usual fashion and that was it. My hair feels so bouncy this morning. I just love it!

So I realize that I don't really have to twist my hair every night. But I will do so tonight because I want to comb out my hair and apply adequate moisturizer.

I like this hair style alot. I have a wedding to attend to in August of this year and it would be great to have my hair styled like for the occassion. The only problem is that I will be travelling on the Friday before the wedding which is on the Sunday and I know for sure, the style would not look fresh by the Sunday. This is one of my co-workers, and friend OJ. It has been a while that I wanted to take his picture and I finally got it yesterday. When he saw the pictures he was very surprised at how his hair good looks. He said that he does not really get the opportunity to see his hair from a back view. So my response to hims is this is what attracts the ladies. LOL!!!

He expressed that the maintenance of the locks could be quite time consuming. To have a good looking head of natural hair, it has to be washed and ever so often the hair has to be re-locked. He said that this can be a bit painful (I did not know this). And there is also the financial aspect of it. Certain products will have to be bought to keep the hair looking. Some men have their locks styled - maybe in braids for example.

I was talking to a male friend the day (he also has his hair in locks) and he express that the maintenance of the locks could be quite time consuming. I had my hair touch up, on Wednesday 7th April, with ORS relaxer (I bought the box about 4 months ago and I use the second bottle of relaxer that day). When I went to work today (Saturday 19th April) I was complimented on how good my hair looks. I am a bit disppointed that there is not much hair growth. But I should not complain much because I had new growth but apparently there has been some hair breakage. But looking at this picture I must agree my hair looks good!!!

I remember the days when I had my hair in this type of style. The front of my hair was not that long though. The problem with this style is that it is high maintenance. There are some days when you may have a bad hair day and you CANNOT pull your hair back in a pony tail. And to keep the style looking good, you will have to keep the hair at the back very low. I never did like how my hair looked (at the back) when it started to grow back.

One advantage I could remember is when I set my hair, it would last for the entire week.

ORS Replenishing Conditioner

Okay this is my review of ORS Replenishing Conditioner. In one of my previous post, I inserted a video about a review of ORS shampoo and conditioner and I wrote that I would be purchasing these products. I did but I was only able to get the packs of the conditioner because they only had the very large bottles in the store.

Well over the weekend, I washed my hair and used these products. I love the smell of the shampoo and the conditioner, hmmm - it smells like citrus! It is so thick and creamy I don't think I ever used a product as creamy as this. I love how my hair felt with the conditioner in it. So I will be getting the large bottle of this conditioner!

In my last post I wrote about my latest technique of styling my hair. I am enjoying this one too. Today I am posting some pictures so you can see what it looks like. Now keep in mind that I took these pictures at tne end of the day PLUS it was very windy today so my hair was all messed up when I went out for lunch today. But at the end of the day it was still looking good.

The picture to the right is how I plait my hair at night, as you can see I did not even create a straight path but it does not matter. I then secured the ends by twisting them into a little Bantu Knot and then securing them with a pono-o.

The next morning I just finger combed my hair.

As much as I like Bantu Knots, I have realized that it looks better and I have more control when my relaxer is about approximately 6 weeks old. After a touch up I think I will use this braiding method.

Hey, I posted some Organic Root Stimulator (ORS) Carrot Oil and I applied some to my hair last night. I then braided my hair in two vertical corn rows.

This morning, I unplait my hair and finger combed it. I was very pleased with the results. My hair looked nice and wavy. The only problem was that the weather was a bit damp so my waves became a little loose soon after. But guess what? I will be doing my hair like this for the rest of the week!

A few days ago I plait my hair in two vertical corn rows. The next day I unplait them in order to wash my hair. I had a little problem unplaiting the end of one row, so I left it with the thought that while washing my hair I would have been able to unplait it easier. That that was a big mistake! I still could not unplait that end as a matter of fact it became more difficult after wetting my hair. To be truthful I had to bust that knot out. I was most upset after I had done that. I was invited to a function a few nights ago so I decided that since my hair was not looking the way that I would like it to look with my Bantu Knots comb out, I decided to purchase this hair piece. My son does not like it. She said that I looks a Lap Pet. I had to ask him what was that and he said that it is those dogs that people hold up in their arms like little dolls!

Now I was invited to a function on Sunday and I don't know how to style my hair. But I however have a quick fix solution but would not tell you right now. Well last night I shampooed and conditioned my hair because it was feeling a bit itchy. I towel dried a bit, applied some coconut oil moisturizer and castrol oil, combed it back in one and tied my head. I will be combing my hair in one until I can figure what to do with my hair next.

For the past two days, I notice that my hair is feeling sort of thin as if I was loosing my hair. Maybe it is to heavy with my Castol Oil and Coconut Oil. So I washed and roller set my hair last night. Hopefully I should feel a difference tomorrow.

I co washed my hair last night and decided to roller set it. I sprayed it with some leave in conditioner first. This morning, I removed the curlers and as you can see my hair is all 'high' , puffy and out of control. So I decided to wrap my hair and tye it for a few minutes to smooth out the curls a bit. After about 45 minutes, I removed my head tye, unwrapped my hair and combed it out. My curls were definately more controlled. One of my co workers asked me what I did with it and I told her that I washed and set it. Apparently she liked my changed look.

Hey everybody, I just returned from my salon and had a pedicure done. I do this every month. I don't want to get cracked heels and to have rough feet. It is my routine every month to get this done. My toes looked a little wrinkled that is because they were soaking in water. This is also an oppunity to pamper myself.

My husband has beautiful toes and I am always admiring them. When his toe nails get too long, I will cut them. Then one day I said to myself, "I have beautiful toes too!!!" I like to see my toes nails with natural nail polish - I admire their beauty that way. I rarely used colored nail polish because they stain the nails. I was just a bit adventurous today.

Summary: There are several methods and treatments available for hair relaxing and straightening for the many looking to control frizzy hair. Chemical and natural treatments are used, but caution must be taken when using chemical methods to avoid burns and damage to the hair and scalp.

Many women do not care for the texture of their hair: too curly, too frizzy, too thin, too thick…too unmanageable! Consequently, there are many methods to control, soften and straighten hair. Women have been attempting to manage their out-of-control tresses forever with hair relaxers. Oh, to be charmed with the perfect, shiny hair that some rare women have! Unfortunately, most have hair which is less than wonderful.

The following chart shows the most common hair relaxers and a quick guide to the most asked questions about relaxers.

The straightening or relaxing methods range from chemical to natural, and some have existed for years, while others are quite new. Lye, or sodium hydroxide, has been used for hair relaxing for a century. It is a chemical hair relaxer which is quite strong, and it is effective even on thick, course hair, but is very harsh. It softens hair fibers by penetrating hair to break its bonds. Lye does relax hair; however, it is a dangerous chemical which can easily cause damage to the hair and scalp.

Another chemical relaxing method is Guanidine Hydroxide, which is considered a “non-lye” relaxing method. It is known to do less damage than lye, but it is still a chemical which can cause harm. Care must also be taken with this method to protect hair from damage by using conditioning treatments before and after application.

Ammonium thioglycolate is commonly known as a “thio” relaxer. It is not as caustic as lye and guaradine hydroxide, however there is strong evidence that it is a sink toxicant. It has the same main active ingredient as a chemical perm, and it works by permanently straightening the hair instead of making it curly.

There are natural hair relaxers available which effectively and safely soften and enhance hair. The ingredients include alkaline water, minerals, proteins, vitamins and conditioners which work by penetrating the hair without destroying the outer layer. By also balancing the pH of the hair, natural hair relaxers make hair silky and manageable. They are much safer than the chemical options, and do not cause damage.

There are some new methods of straightening and relaxing hair including Japanese hair straightening and keratin treatments, which are both done in professional salons. The Japanese method has existed for about a decade, but it is growing in popularity. While some of the relaxing methods calm hair and sometimes maintain some of its wave, this permanent method (until new growth comes in) makes hair very straight. It is also known as thermal reconditioning, and it involves a chemical formula mixed with specialized water applied to the hair, and then carefully heat sealing it. This method is very effective for straightening hair, but it is time consuming and can cost upwards of $600 for a treatment. In addition, once treated, the hair will not curl, it may break and it may be so straight that is falls unnaturally over the shoulders.

Keratin hair treatments are a non-chemical method to soften, straighten and repair hair. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein in hair (and skin), and this method allows the protein to penetrate and replenish hair. The keratin solution is meticulously applied to clean, dry hair, and then, similar to the Japanese treatment, it is heat sealed with a specialized flat iron. It is effective for achieving softness, but this method is also quite time consuming. It can cost as much as $600 and contains high concentrations of formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical.

There are many choices available for hair relaxers, including chemical and natural options. Deciding which method to use depends on the type of hair and the result which is desired. Always be cautious, especially with the chemical treatments, and always do a test to see results.

Air Dry II

In one of my previous post, I discussed about air drying my hair. The technique was to apply all my moisturizers and oils in my hair (after washing) and tying my head. The problem with that technique is that my hair takes very long to dry.

For example, I washed my hair this morning and if I used that technique, my hair would still be damp in the morning. What I started doing and it is working for me, I towel dried my hair as much I could, sprayed some leave in conditioner and just let it fully air dry.

When I was satisfied that my hair was totally dry (it took about an hour), I then applied my moisturize and oil and twist into Bantu Knots. I am in the morning I will be able to style my hair in the morning with out any problems.

I can also use this technique during the week.

Last night as I was moisturizing my hair and made a mistake of putting too much of my coconut oil moisturizer to the top of my hair. Normally, I would twist my hair into four Bantu Knots, two to the top and two to the bottom. As I was twisting the knots at the top of my head, I realized that my hair was too damp.

This morning as I untwist my hair, it was still damp and of course I did not like the results. So I kinda of folded the top my hair into a mohawk and kept it in place with a crab and I just let the back of my hair hang down.

What is a french roll?

In my last post on 18th November, I wrote a bit about French Roll so of course I thought that it would be in order to get a video about What is a French Roll and how it is done. So here it is.

Watching this video is like being at the silent movies in the old days. The author of this video has no dialogue and no music but the content, in my opinion, is good.

This picture is how I had my hair styled when I got married in 2007. I saw it in an magazaine and right away I knew that was what I wanted. Eventhough my hair was a good length, my hairdresser added some false in the roll to give it more body.

Here in the BVI I notice most ladies mostly put their hair in one and add some pins on. Personally I get headaches when I have my hair styled like this so I don't do it. I don't braid my hair any more because I don't like to be at the hairdresser that long. Depending of the hair style, it takes about four - five hours!!!

I remember about two days after I got married, I washed out my hair. I was so paranoid bout having the gel in my hair too long.

Acrylic Nails

I just felt like doing a post about my co worker's acrylic nails. She has them done about every two weeks and they are always prettly painted.

Many years ago, I too was in this fashion and really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that I could wash my dishes and my nail polish would not flake off.

I fooled myself by saying that my nails were growing. They were growing but they were VERY soft. One year I decided to give my nails a rest from the acrylic, only to discover that the beds of my finger nails were extremely soft. They bent and broke very easily. I was concerned that my nails would never get back to their original state but after some time, they were back to normal.

The picture to the right is of my daughters nails, she enjoys taking pictures of her nails when are just done.

French Roll

One of my co workers had a weave installed in her hair this weekend and guess what? It was a curly weave! It looks like my hair when I comb out my Bantu Knots! I think the ladies at my office are paying attention to my hairdos. What I would like to see them do is, to focus on their natural hair rather than installing braids and weaves into their hair.

This first lady I mentioned about is an exception, she was ill about a year ago and she was on some heavy medication and apparently it caused her to have a lot of hair loss. So she wears are wig every day.

My boss also wore a wig for a period of time but her story was that her hairdresser colored her hair black and that was not what she wanted. So guess what the hairdresser did? She applied a different color to my boss's hair the same day!!! So of course she suffered a great deal of hair loss.

She is now really recovering from that horrible experience and does not wear the wig anymore. She combs her hair in a French Roll.

There is a young man at work that is noticing my curls. A few months ago he took some pictures of me and they came out great! I was very pleased with the pictures. This is one of them.

Last week, I co washed my hair and decided to wrap my hair. That morning we had a lot of rain and my hair got a little wet. When he saw me he asked what is wrong with my hair. I could tell he did not like what he saw. That night I twist my hair in Bantu Knots and the next morning, by his expression I could tell he was pleased!

This is the first video that I viewed for the evening and like it. It is about a lady sharing her hair health and growth journey. It reminded of my niece-in-law (I did a post about her and her friends at her 18th birthday beach party). She said that her hair was breaking so she had to cut it. She even spoke of installing some braids.

Personally putting braids and weaves in your hair does not assist in making your healthy and reducing hair breakage. First the hair will stil be dry because you not really be able to fully moisturise the hair daily. In addition when removing the braids, there is a lot of breakage. You will notice the thining of this lady's (in the video) hair line.

P.S. I got my PC fixed so I am back full blast!!

Since I started watching Youtube videos with tips how to style my relaxed hair, I have been twisting my hair in Bantu Knots basically every night or folding it into pin curls. I recently tried the flex rods. My husband does not like it when I twist my hair in the Bantu Knots or when I wrap my hair. Strangely enough he does not complain when I roller set my hair and sleep with the rollers in my hair.

Occassionally he would run his fingers through my hair but I hardly sleep with my hair open out any more. When we sleep, we are always hugging each other. Some times, my hair would get trapped under his arms and I would have to gently pull my hair to get it from under his arms. This irritates me.

My computer is presently not working, when I powered it on, it stays in a infinite loop starting Windows and shutting off. I have to take it to the 'doctor' today. Hopefully I will get it back by weekend. I feel kind of lost because I have gotten into a daily routine where I will check my emails first thing in the morning and publish my daily post on my blogs.

I washed my hair last night and decided to test these spiral/twist rods. I had some problems getting the rods to stay in place so I came up with a master plan to keep them place by using my pony Os that I use to keep my Bantu Knots in place. I air dryed my hair a bit and then I put in the rods. I just damp my hair ends a bit.

These are pictures of the results after I combed out my hair this morning. Sorry guys I did not put on any make up this morning. I was sweating too much.

I was not quite satisfied with the fact that I had to use my Pony Os to keep these purple twist rods in place. So I went to the store and purchase another set of rods. This time I got the yellow ones. There are five rods in the pack and I bought three packs and a bottle of leave in conditioner.

As soon as I got home I put one to the test by folding it and it past the test! I am satisfied!

I had planned to co-wash my hair last night and wrap it but my sister-in-law said that she liked how my hair looks (Bantu Knot comb out curls) so I decided to twist my hair in knots again last night. But thinking about it as my hair was touched up a few days ago, it is still bone straight. So if I had wrapped it, my hair would have been ablolutely straight. I would have had to set my roller set my hair first and then wrap it the next morning for a few minutes. That works well for me.

Thinking about it the average person I see with long hair, wear it straight. If you see a woman with curls in their hair, I can guarantee you that it is artifical.

These are the products that I purchased today, one bottle of Suave Tropical Coconut conditioner, it cost $4.25. This is the conditioner I will use to do my co-wash.

There are some products that I wanted to buy like Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula Conditioner & Shampoo, Fantasia Olive Oil Shampoo & Conditioner. Maybe next time

Well I got my spiral rods, cost $8.95 for 5 purple rods in the pack. I bought 2 packs. But the problem is when I attempted to put on in my hair, it did not stay folded, it just sprang back 'open'. The only other size they had in the store was some very thin ones and I think those would make my hair too curly. I will try another store to see there any smaller ones.

Dark eyelids

About a month ago I was taking some picures with my pin curls comb out and I realized that there was a black area on my eyelids. Now if I was wearing make up that day it would have made sense to me but I was not. I have not been wearing make up for months now becuase I sweat alot. Overweight, getting down in age maybe the causes of this these dark areas over my eyes.

So I decided to start wearing eyeshadow to cover the dark areas. There is another picture that I took with my make up on and I like how I look, it gave me the encouragment to continue wearing makeup more regular.

I went to the store today to purchase some hair products and purchase 4 cases of eye shadow (I guess I was a little over excited). The case that I presently have, has been in my pocesssion for too long so I had to dispose of it.

Olive Oil Relaxer

I touch up my hair today after 13 weeks.
This is the first time I have stretched my relaxer this long. Maybe next time I will go for 17 weeks.

I purchased a box of Organics Olive Oil Conditioning Relaxer System for $14.99 which I thought was a bit expensive until I saw the contents. There are two containers of relaxer therefore I can get two touch ups with the purchase of one box!

There are also two packets of Organics Olive Oil Cream Moisturizer and two packets of Organics Conditioning Hair Mayonnaise in the kit. I always liked this relaxer but for sometime now my hairdresser did not have any in stock so I purchased my own today to have my hair touch up.

Before I left the salon, I had my hairdresser wrap my hair and when I got home I combed it out so to take this picture. I normally put a rinse in my hair but I did not so this time.

Last night I was looking though YouTube videos to see if I could find a way to style my hair after I co-washed it, and as I am stretching my relaxer. But I could not find anything that was pleasing to me. I did co wash my hair and decided that I will pull back my hair in one today. But after all the pretty hair styles, I h ad my hair in, for the past few weeks, I found it difficult to revert back to my old ways.

My Bantu Knots comb out was not looking too good yesterday, my new growths were really outstanding. So I decided to look for a different way to style my hair in the stretching relaxer phase.

I notice that after I wash and condition my hair, it gets tangle quite a bit. I am wondering if it is because I am stretching my relaxer or the new shampoo and conditioner that I purchased are not working for me. They are both Neutrogena products.

During sleep and wake, last night I got an spiritual inspiration to set my hair a particular way so when I got up about 4:30am this morning I set my hair as I was inspired. The results look pretty good and I am pleased. I had my husband take these pictures. Only one change I will make next time, I will use some smaller rollers to the back of my head. I normally wear my hair straight so I mostly have large rollers.

My new growths are more tamed this morning and I like the fact that my hair is well moisturized but not greasy AND I am not scratching my scalp as much. Since I have been doing Bantu comb outs I notice I have been scratching my scalp a lot. I don’t know if it is all in my mind?????

Grey Hair

My son was telling me last night that I had a grey hair and I was doubting him so he took this picture to prove his point. I normally have a bergundy rinse in my hair so the greys are not really visible. But since I have decided to stretch my relaxer, all the rinse has been washed out and now the greys are 'peeping' out!

It is white strand that looks like a worm. This week is 13 weeks since I last relaxed my hair, I would most definately be touching up my hair this weekend.

Braid out

I took these first set of pictures of my braid out and did not particiall like the result. I combed my hiar into four vertical corn rows and combed out my hair the next day. At time I was not into finger combing.

The next set of pictures is of my second attempt at braid out. This time I combed my hair into seven dingle plaits. But since I was a bit concerned about the ends of my hair being straight, I then rolled each plait into a finger pin curl. The next day I unplait each plait and finger combed my hair. Again I did not really like the results but I will give it a third attempt with my hair well moisturised and sealed.

I realize that braid outs give you waves but Bantu Knots gives you curls and I love curls!!!!

Feeling Good!

I had a great morning. I was using my friend's computer and I realized that my favicons are working on all my blogs!!!! Yea!!!! The reason for my excitement this morning, is on my computer, the favicon will work on one of my blogs and not the others. I eventually got a bit frustrated and decided to move on to something else. I have already spent quite a bit of time on this feature, now I see the results today!!!! I think my browser needs upgrading.

To take my joy to a higher level, I opened my blog on Calypso Legends, and was playing the videos, so I was being entertained while I was working. You should have seen me humming to myself and 'dancing'! My next project is to add a favicon to my cooking website. This is my happy face ..............

Spiral rods

I had some of these spiral rods in my cupboard for quite a while and I eventually threw them in the garbage because I thought that the were no good. I only used them once and did not like the look. I think my problem was that I did not wet my hair so my ends were sticking out. I would have to purchase some more of these spiral rods and try to set my hair with them again.
